The much-anticipated "Jamel rocks the Förster" music and democracy festival is set to take place on August 22 and 23, amidst a legal dispute between the festival organizers and local authorities that has been the subject of court proceedings for several weeks.

Initially, the county (Landkreis) prohibited the sale or consumption of alcohol at the festival, citing concerns likely related to public order or safety. However, the festival organizers contested this prohibition by filing a legal challenge, which was reviewed by the administrative court in Schwerin.

In a ruling that exemplifies the judicial oversight role of administrative courts in Germany, the court found that restricting alcohol at the festival was not sufficiently warranted under relevant regulations or that the festival’s conditions justified an exception. As a result, the Oberverwaltungsgericht in Greifswald has issued a ruling that alcohol consumption is allowed at the festival, overriding the county’s ban.

The demand for tickets for the festival is greater than the venue's capacity, and renowned musicians are expected to perform. However, the festival has faced hostility from the local community, which is dominated by right-wing extremists.

In a new development, the municipality of Gägelow has wanted to charge a fee for the use of municipal land for the first time for the festival. To avoid paying the fee, the organizers have registered it as a longer-lasting assembly this year.

The "Jamel rocks the Förster" festival was founded in 2007 by Horst and Birgit Lohmeyer. Last year, acts at the festival included the Fantastischen Vier and Olli Schulz. Admission will be charged for the concert, but glass bottles are not permitted.

The county has been involved in the proceedings regarding the festival due to certain conditions set by them. The Oberverwaltungsgericht has partially granted the county’s appeal against a decision by the administrative court in Schwerin, but the court's decision regarding the conditions set by the county for the "Jamel rocks the Förster" festival remains in effect.

As the festival approaches, the organizers are preparing for a memorable event, despite the legal and community challenges they have faced.
