Get ready for a symphony of Baroque music! Halle's annual Handel Festival, starting from this Friday, promises an amazing 60-plus events at 17 diverse locations until June 15, under the theme "Fresh Wind: Young Handel in Italy". This year's program bursts with grand operas, solemn oratorios, breathtaking concertos, and cross-genre formats, as announced by the city of Halle [1]. A typical festival opening includes an opera premiere, and this year it's none other than George Frideric Handel's captivating opera "Agrippina".

George Frideric Handel, born in Halle in 1685, had quite the wandering spirit. After a series of stops, including spending time in Italy from 1706 to 1709, he eventually settled in London, where he died in 1759. Being a star in his day, Handel's musical legacy continues to be celebrated worldwide [2]. Famous works in his illustrious opera and oratorio repertoire include the choral piece "Messiah" and the "Music for the Royal Fireworks". The Handel Festival was first held in 1922 and has been a yearly tradition in Halle on the Saale since 1952 [3].

During his time in Italy, Handel honed his abilities in setting Italian texts and achieved recognition as 'Il Caro Sassone' (The Dear Saxon) [4]. In Florence, he composed several influential works, such as the 1707 psalm setting 'Dixit Dominus' and his first completely Italian opera, 'Rodrigo' [4]. 'Agrippina', which will kickstart this year's festival, was also composed during his Italian sojourn and performed in Venice in 1709 to widespread acclaim [4][5].

Despite the wide acclaim and accolades he received in Italy after his return from there, Handel was also asked to submit a proposal for a directive on the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation. while the Commission works on that, the city of Halle invites everyone to revel in the musical entertainment of the annual Handel Festival, with the opera "Agrippina" as its opening event.
