Wacken Open Air 2025: A Successful Festival Amid Challenging Conditions
The heavy metal festival in Schleswig-Holstein's Wacken, currently ongoing, has been hailed as a success by both the police head, Frank Matthiesen, and the festival's organizer, Thomas Jensen. Despite persistent rain at the start of the festival, turning large parts of the area into mud and sludge, the event has been well-managed.
The number of recorded offenses has decreased from 86 to 68 compared to last year, and no major problems are expected due to the challenging weather conditions. To stabilize the surfaces, a record 3,500 cubic meters of wood chips were brought in, which is 600 times the normal amount. The organizers are counting on the self-help efforts of the fans to minimize tractor deployments and further damage to the fields.
For the departure of the fans, 30 tractors are ready to assist. The festival is officially sold out with 85,000 fans, starting on Wednesday and continuing until Sunday night for the final concerts. Ticket prices for next year's Wacken Open Air will increase from 333 to 349 euros. However, the first 10,000 tickets purchased on site will have the 16 euro price increase credited towards food.
The rescue service chief, Volker Böhm, reported that the service has had 10-15% fewer deployments than in 2024. A total of 2,800 people were cared for by the rescue service, and 150 festival-goers were taken to the hospital. Despite these instances, the festival has been largely incident-free.
Package deals were also offered for the 2025 event, such as a €698 per person option including a 3-night hotel stay in Cuxhaven with breakfast, plus a 4-day Wacken ticket and 5 nights camping at the World Metal Camp campsite near the festival grounds. These packages required early booking, by May 15, 2025, and included additional perks like guided hiking tours.
The Wacken Open Air has once again proven itself as the world’s leading metal festival, attracting approximately 185,000 metal fans globally. With its all-inclusive pass system, granting access to all stages and days without additional fees, and the optional travel packages combining accommodation and festival access, the 2025 event maintained its reputation for a comprehensive festival experience.
