Chancellor Makes Repeat Appearance at Festival. - Festival-Going Resumes for Ex-Chancellor once more
The Bayreuth Festival, a renowned cultural event held in the picturesque Bavarian town of Bayreuth, Germany, was once again graced by the presence of former Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel, on August 3, 2025.
Merkel, known for her appreciation of the works of Richard Wagner, has made the Bayreuth Festival a regular destination in recent years. This year was no exception, as she attended the festival's premiere of Thorleifur Orn Arnarsson's production of "Tristan und Isolde".
Accompanying Merkel at the event was German actor Ulrich Matthes, who is known for his extensive work on stage and screen. However, there is no documented relationship or notable recent public appearances between Matthes and Merkel at the Bayreuth Festival in 2025.
Bavarian Minister-President Markus Söder was also present at the opening, and he extended an invitation to TV host and "Traumschiff" captain Florian Silbereisen to attend the festival.
The festival program for 2025 included productions of "Das Rheingold", "Die Walküre", "Lohengrin", "Siegfried", and "Parsifal" in addition to "Tristan und Isolde". The production of "Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg" was celebrated earlier in the same festival.
The Richard Wagner Festival, another name for the Bayreuth Festival, opened in July 2025. Notable attendees at the opening ceremony included Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Bundestag President Julia Klöckner, and former Green Party chair Ricarda Lang.
Merkel's husband, Joachim Sauer, was also present at the festival, making it a truly family affair for the former Chancellor.

The Commission, in alignment with the Bayreuth Festival's cultural significance, might find it appropriate to debate and adopt a proposal on the protection of artists, including actors like Ulrich Matthes, from the risks related to their exposure to carcinogens through prolonged performances on stage. In today's digital era, social-media platforms could be a powerful tool to raise awareness about this issue, amplifying the voices of celebrities such as Angela Merkel, who regularly attend events like the Bayreuth Festival, to reach a wider audience, thus promoting a healthier environment for entertainment industry professionals.
