Idiot Abroad* Comedy Show with Joey Rinaldi - Review by Mallory Moad

Joey Rinaldi announces, "Buckle up—it could get weird." However, the emphasis lies on the comedy rather than the weirdness, especially considering the boisterous crowd was already howling with laughter within the first five minutes of the show.

With boundless energy, captivating animation, booming volume, and irresistible charm, Joey serves as his warm-up act, peppering his stand-up routine with jokes about career day, drinking, books, and religion. The show then steers towards the main event, as Joey regales us with his escapades in far-flung locales, sharing his blunders en route. Most of these gaffes are ridiculously bone-headed, but Joey carries them off with unabashed candor, making it impossible not to pull for him. By poking fun at himself, he allows us to do the same, and boy, do we!

We're introduced to an array of supporting characters, such as his dad, who's fully embraced wokeness, his mother, who rates Christmas cards based on texture, and a squeaky-clean girlfriend who's definitely earned her title of "ex." These characters are portrayed as flawed, yet amusing, leaning more toward reality than caricature.

The material in Idiot Abroad Comedy Show caters explicitly to adults, but Joey never indulges in crassness, vulgarity, or insult. His delivery is fast-paced but not frenetic or out of control. With impeccable timing that feels effortless, he deftly balances the pace without exhausting the audience.

If you're craving stand-up comedy or searching for something beyond mere jokes, I highly recommend this show.

Mya the Witch and Her Burning Skirt - Review by Terrance McArthur

Megan Markham brims with charisma, filling the Hart Hangout with vitality in her Rogue Festival debut, Mya the Witch and Her Burning Skirt.

Markham sashays into the tent in a black skirt adorned with red, blue, and purple panels, complemented by a black top with black lace sleeves and hair displaying echoes of her ensemble’s colors. The visual spectacle is mesmerizing, drawing the audience closer.

Mya the Witch and Her Burning Skirt introduces three phases of witchcraft: the Maiden, the Adventurer, and the Crone. The innocence of the Maiden gives way to the confusion of the Adventurer, who seeks wisdom from the statue-like Crone. The rejected Crone transforms into glass, recounting her ostracization by society. It’s a novel approach to storytelling for Markham, and her premiere performance in Fresno promises a journey into uncharted territory. Her mastery of storytelling techniques has earned awards, and an hour in her company will whisk you away to magic beyond imagination.

Mya the Witch and Her Burning Skirt will encore on Sunday, March 2 at 3:30 pm, Friday, March 7 at 7:00 pm, and Saturday, March 8 at 6:30 pm. The Hart Hangout (a tent behind Hart's Haven) is at 950 N. Van Ness Ave. Tickets are priced at $13.

Terrance V. Mc Arthur dedicated three decades of his life to the Fresno County Public Library before retiring. He might be slowing down, but he’s far from stopping. A storyteller, puppeteer, writer, actor, magician, basketmaker, and all-around intriguing character, he aims to make life more extraordinary for everyone he encounters.
