Get ready for some melodious magic! Kicking off its 35th summer extravaganza, the buzzing Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival blew the roof off at a sell-out show in Wismar. Under the leadership of the legendary Herbert Blomstedt, the Elbphilharmonie Orchestra brought down the house at the prestigious Georgen-Church. The electrifying program included a specially composed festival opener, as well as pieces by Bach and Beethoven.

Minister-President Manuela Schwesig graced the event, praising the organizers and showering the festival with congratulations on its 35th anniversary. "The Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival is older than our country. It was born before the reunification of Germany and the creation of today's Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, with the first festival concert taking place at Schwerin's State Theatre," Schwesig reminisced about the origins of this iconic music fest that's now one of Germany's most popular classical music events.

Broad Spectrum of Entertainment

Concert night has often acted as the first taste of Northeast Germany for many folks, leading to further exploration of the region. "The festival has brought renowned musicians and orchestras to Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, with some of them developing strong ties with our country and the festival," said Schwesig, naming the violinist Daniel Hope as a prime example who frequently graces the festival stage.

Catering to a wide array of musical preferences, the festival isn't just about classical tunes. Festivals like the one in Great Park, Ludwigslust, and the event in Hasenwinkel near Wismar offer family-friendly fun. "The festival appeals to music lovers from all walks of life," said Schwesig, already anticipating the traditional family festival in Hasenwinkel.

Unifying Power of Music

Festival Director Ursula Haselböck paid tribute to the unifying might of music. Founded to bring music to more than just the stunning Hanseatic cities, the festival has also sought to reach those who may feel neglected or overlooked in other regions. "It's essential that we unite to ensure that intolerance and hate speech don't overshadow our society, and that our country remains a place where everyone can feel at home," Haselböck emphasized.

More Than a Musical Feast

The festival's elaborate summer program stretches until mid-September, with over 130 events across 96 venues. These diverse locations, ranging from mansions to churches, parks, and factories, mirror the festival's eclectic appeal. From the young talent competition "Young Elite" to a musical mixspreading beyond classical music, and offering E- and U-music, the festival offers something for everyone.

As the festival's resident prize-winner, Russian cellist Anastasia Kobekina promises a captivating run with 20 performances. The festival's grand finale in July at Ulrichshusen (Mecklenburg Lake District) will honor the founding concert of the MV festival, with concerts at Redefin's Landgestüt (Ludwigslust-Parchim district) and the festival barn at Ulrichshusen being perennial favorites.
