Festspielhaus Füssen teams up with Luisenburg Festivals for a joint venture - Festival Collaboration: Luisenburg Festival and Füssen Festival Join Forces

The Luisenburg-Festspiele, Germany's oldest open-air theater, and the Festival House Füssen have joined forces this season in a groundbreaking collaboration aimed at creating a sustainable and innovative cultural model. This unique partnership combines the strengths of both institutions, enhancing the cultural offerings and operational efficiency for both festivals.

### Key Aspects of the Collaboration

The collaboration involves artistic exchange, joint programming, resource and expertise sharing, audience development, and innovative cultural concepts. Artists are performing across both venues, broadening the reach and diversity of the seasonal programs. Sharing technical, managerial, and creative resources helps reduce costs and optimizes operational workflows, making the festivals more financially sustainable. Cross-promotion and audience exchange attract new visitors, building a stronger, more engaged community for performing arts in the region.

Together, they are testing new formats and interdisciplinary projects that blend traditional festival elements with contemporary and experimental art forms.

### Why It’s a “Model for the Future”

This collaborative approach is a beacon of sustainability, reducing redundancy and environmental impact, setting a precedent for eco-friendly festival operations. The partnership strengthens both institutions financially and artistically, making them less vulnerable to economic or social disruptions. The scalability of this model allows it to be replicated by other regional festivals, promoting networked cultural ecosystems rather than isolated events. Embracing joint creative development encourages experimentation and helps festivals stay relevant to changing audience interests.

### Highlights of the Collaboration

The musical "Soul for Soul," written by Birgit Simmler and composed by Frank Nimsgern, was initially performed in Füssen with a revolving stage and extensive technical equipment. The premiere of the musical took place in Wunsiedel on the impressive rock stage of the Luisenburg. Despite the challenges posed by bad weather, which often makes live performances particularly dramatic at the Luisenburg-Festspiele, the transition between the performances in Füssen and Wunsiedel worked well, according to Birgit Simmler.

The sound quality on a real stage is superior to streaming, and more than 100,000 spectators attend the performances each year at the Luisenburg-Festspiele. Tickets for the current season are being sold smoothly, despite the trend since Corona. The audience seats are covered on the Luisenburg, ensuring a comfortable experience for all attendees.

This collaboration between the Luisenburg-Festspiele and Festival House Füssen this season exemplifies a forward-thinking, cooperative model that enhances artistic quality, economic viability, and cultural impact, offering a blueprint for future cultural festivals.

  1. In this innovative collaboration, vocational training programs are being integrated into the artistic exchange, providing opportunities for artists to learn new skills and techniques, enriching the quality of the performances at both the Luisenburg-Festspiele and the Festival House Füssen.
  2. To complement the cultural offerings and engage a wider audience, the partnership includes community events such as music workshops and performances, transforming the collaboration into a hub for arts and entertainment in the region.
