Ferry collision in Florida results in fatalities and numerous injuries, authorities declaring a 'mass casualty situation'.
A tragic incident unfolded in Florida as a boat collided with a ferry, resulting in one fatality and several injuries. The boat responsible for the crash made a hasty exit from the scene, authorities revealed.
The unfortunate event took place near the Memorial Causeway Bridge in Clearwater at approximately 8:30 PM local time on Sunday. All casualties were passengers on the ferry, which vehicles and crew members. Six patients were declared trauma alerts, including two with serious injuries who were airlifted to the hospital.
Officials classified the crash as a "mass casualty incident" due to the number and severity of injuries. The ferry came to a halt on a sandbar just south of the bridge, and there are no signs of anyone missing.
The boat that fled the scene has been identified by another law enforcement agency, as per the City of Clearwater's update. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission will be heading the investigation into the crash.
This incident occurred at the end of the 17-day Sugar Sand Festival held on Clearwater beach. Multiple videos on social media show emergency personnel rushing to the scene with flashing lights. Police had earlier advised drivers to avoid Memorial Causeway.
In unrelated Florida news, hundreds of passengers were evacuated after a Delta Air Lines Airbus A330 engine caught fire at Orlando International Airport.
