Ferrari leads in final practice session of British Grand Prix with Leclerc taking the top spot.
In the final practice session for the 2025 British Grand Prix, Max Verstappen of Red Bull secured pole position with a breathtaking last-lap performance. The Dutch driver edged out McLaren's Oscar Piastri, who qualified second, and Lando Norris, who completed the top three for the Woking-based team.
The session was marked by several interruptions, with two red flags halting the action. The first was due to debris from Oliver Bearman's Haas, and the second was caused by Gabriel Bortoleto spinning and damaging his car's front left suspension. Bearman, driving for Haas, later attributed his crash to cold brakes.
Despite these disruptions, several drivers posted impressive times. Charles Leclerc of Ferrari set the fastest time overall, with a best time of 1 minute 25.498 seconds. However, he was unable to maintain this pace during the qualifying session, finishing seventh, behind teammate Lewis Hamilton who qualified sixth.
McLaren's Piastri was just 0.068 seconds slower than Leclerc in the second fastest time, while Norris was fourth fastest. Williams' Alex Albon was ahead of Mercedes' George Russell in the practice session, but Russell managed to qualify fourth, ahead of Albon.
Red Bull's Yuki Tsunoda was fifth fastest in the practice session, but could not maintain this pace in qualifying, finishing eighth. Aston Martin reported that neither of their drivers were able to do a representative lap on the fastest soft tyre due to the red flags.
The qualifying order saw McLaren securing two positions on the front row and third place on the grid, while Ferrari struggled to break into the top five. This indicates that while Ferrari remains competitive, McLaren outperformed them in qualifying at Silverstone this weekend.
The top ten qualifying order is as follows:
1. Max Verstappen (Red Bull) - Pole position 2. Oscar Piastri (McLaren) 3. Lando Norris (McLaren) 4. George Russell (Mercedes) 5. Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari) 6. Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) 7. Andrea Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes) - with a 3-place grid penalty 8. Oliver Bearman (Haas) - with a 10-place grid penalty 9. Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin) 10. Pierre Gasly (Alpine)
Qualifying for Sunday's race, Hamilton's first at home in Ferrari colours, follows later in the afternoon. The race promises to be an exciting one, with McLaren showing strong form and Red Bull's Verstappen aiming for his fifth win of the season.
