The Emilia-Romagna GP qualifying was full of drama as Ferrari faced yet another setback in their chase for pole. Championship leader Oscar Piastri maintains his dominance.
Oscar Piastri snatched pole position for the Emilia-Romagna GP at Imola, with Ferrari and local hope Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes) enduring a disastrous qualifying session. World champion Max Verstappen (Netherlands/Red Bull) and George Russell (Mercedes) followed in second and third places.
Team Principal Fred Vasseur from Ferrari expressed his frustration: "We're utterly disappointed, not delivering is unacceptable. We're frustrated beyond belief." Charles Leclerc exclaimed "My God, my God, my God", and the "Gazzetta dello Sport" echoed their sentiments with "A nightmare for Ferrari".
"Lost it, but managed well"
Piastri clinched his third pole of the season - all achieved this year. His teammate Lando Norris (England) finished fourth. "It was a tough fight, I thought I'd lost it in the final corner, but luckily, it was enough," Piastri radioed in.
Ferrari's drivers, Leclerc and Hamilton, as well as Antonelli, underwent a bitter letdown, failing to advance to the final phase of qualifying. Leclerc starts 11th, Hamilton 12th, and Antonelli 13th. Nico Hülkenberg (Sauber) fares poorly, ending up 17th, making it tough for him to earn points.
Tsunoda's Crash and Consequences
Yuki Tsunoda caused a stir: His driving error led to a crash in the initial qualifying stage, causing his Red Bull to thunder into the barrier and flip. Tsunoda expressed remorse for "inexcusably disrupting the team". Red Bull's motorsport advisor Helmut Marko criticized Tsunoda's repeated mistakes and the financial impact they had. Miraculously, Tsunoda walked away unscathed. However, the cleanup took a hefty chunk of time.
Tsunoda's teammate Max Verstappen eyes a coup come Sunday. "We've found some speed, the car feels more stable," said the Dutchman. Red Bull's motorsport advisor Helmut Marko is optimistic, stating "I'm certain that Max has a lot of faith in the car".

- Enrichment Data: The qualifying session for the 2025 Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix was not just about Ferrari's misfortune as it was also marked by two significant incidents. Yuki Tsunoda's crash at Variante Villeneuve and Franco Colapinto's crash at Variante Tamburello delayed the session[1]. Additionally, Colapinto received a one-place penalty for a pitbox exit miscommunication[2]. Despite these incidents, Ferrari's misfortune was primarily centered around their qualifying performance, rather than a specific incident causing a disaster. Nevertheless, their lower positions on the grid confirmed that they were outpaced compared to some of their rivals during qualifying.
