Female Vuelta cycling event route for 2025 reveals Barcelona as the starting point and a challenging final stage, considered the toughest in history.
The Vuelta Femenina 2025 is set to be an exciting and challenging event for female cyclists, with a new route, shorter distance, and a tough finale in the mountains of Asturias.
The 11th edition of the race will start in Barcelona and finish in Cotobello, covering Spain's geography from the Mediterranean to the Asturian mountains. The first stage is a team time trial, 8km in length, outside Antoni Gaudí's Casa Milà. This is a change from last year's edition, which was 1 day and 120km longer. The total distance of the race this year is 748km, consisting of 7 stages, moving up from 8 stages in 2024.
Barcelona hosted a team time trial on the first day of the men's Vuelta a España in 2023, and the Vuelta Femenina 2025 will follow suit, setting the stage for a thrilling competition. Stages two, three, and four bring rolling terrain, offering opportunities for sprinters and breakaway hopefuls.
The penultimate day is a flat stage, but the final stage is the longest (152km) and hardest, counting three climbs. The final stage will host a summit finish on the category-one climb of Cotobello, which will be the hardest ever finale in the race's history. With an average gradient of 8.3%, and ramps up to 14.5%, this stage is sure to test the endurance and skills of even the most experienced cyclists.
Among the athletes expected to compete in the toughest stage at Cotobello are Demi Vollering, who won the Vuelta Femenina in 2024, and is expected to defend her title in the 2025 edition. Other strong contenders include Elise Chabbey, Anna Kiesenhofer, Cédrine Kerbaol, Juliette Labous, Anna Van den Breggen, and Antonia Niedermaier. These athletes are active in prominent races in 2025 and represent strong national teams likely to participate in challenging mountain stages.
The winner of the Vuelta Femenina 2025 will be crowned at the end of the final stage. The race will also welcome the Tour de France Grand Départ in 2026, making it an even more significant event in the cycling calendar.
So, mark your calendars! The Vuelta Femenina 2025 will take place from 4-10 May 2025. It promises to be an exciting and challenging race, and we can't wait to see who will emerge victorious.
