Feldberg Sprint 2026 revives a 130-year-old Black Forest skiing tradition

A historic ski race, the High Black Forest's Feldberg Sprint, returns in 2026. This event near me, set for February 21, revives a 130-year-old tradition by following the first documented cross-country route from 1896. Organized by SC Todtnau 1891 e.V., Germany's oldest ski club, the event celebrates the region's deep-rooted skiing heritage while welcoming amateur athletes of all levels.

The race traces the original 5.2-kilometre course, climbing 220 metres through scenic landmarks. Participants will pass the Bismarck Tower, the TV tower, and the village of Seebuck before reaching the finish line. Both touring and cross-country skis are allowed, reflecting the event's inclusive spirit.

The mass start begins at 1 p.m. in Feldberg-Seebuck, with men and women setting off in separate groups. Among the participants is former biathlete Benedikt Doll, adding a competitive edge to the amateur-focused race.

The Feldberg Sprint also highlights how skiing technology has changed since 1896. Back then, enthusiasts relied on heavy wooden skis imported from Norway, paired with basic wool clothing. Today's racers will use lightweight composite skis, advanced bindings, and aerodynamic suits—equipment developed by brands like Dynafit and Völkl through decades of research.

The event offers a rare chance to experience history firsthand on the same trail pioneered over a century ago. By blending tradition with modern gear, the Feldberg Sprint connects the past and present of Black Forest skiing. Registration remains open to all amateur skiers eager to take part in this unique celebration.
