Feijóo Secures 99.72% of Votes for Re-election as PP President

Alberto Núñez Feijóo, the leader of Spain's Popular Party (PP), clinched an astounding 99.72% vote share to remain President of the party, a significant nine-tenths increase from 2022. This claim was confirmed via X social network by Alfonso Serrano, the President of the organizing committee of the congress, and the General Secretary of the PP of Madrid.

From 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM, the party's affiliates and leaders cast their votes in around 1,000 locations for both the President and delegates participating in the congress. A remarkable 51,634 affiliates could vote in the 21st congress, even though the number of participants hasn't been reported. Of these voters, 10,342 hail from Galicia, Feijóo's homeland, where he received 98.58% of the membership's support.

The PP convention is scheduled for July 4-6 in Madrid, and the lead-up to this event has been marked by several crucial dates, including the presentation of the political resolution and statutes resolution.

Politicial Resolution and Statutes Resolution

The political resolution, to be presented in Seville on Tuesday, will collect the ideological vision, principles, and programmatic proposals of the party regarding major political, economic, and social issues. This resolution has been overseen by Juanma Moreno, Alfonso Fernández Manzano, Alma Ezcurra, and Natalia Chueca.

On Wednesday, the statutes resolution, focusing on the internal structure of the party, will be published, proposing reforms or updates to the party's rules of operation, organization, and internal democratic procedures. This resolution has been directed by Fernando López Miras, María Guardiola, Gema Igual, and Dani Sirera.

Possible Reforms to the PP's Primary System

Rumors have been circulating about potential changes to the PP's primary system following Feijoo's announcement of perceived flaws in the current system. However, the specific details regarding these reforms are not available at this time.

As a result of this potential reform, some argue that it may lead to a shift from the current double-round electoral system to a single-round system or the introduction of new voting thresholds. The viability of such changes and their implications remain unclear.

Period of Presenting Amendments

Following the presentation of the resolutions, a period for submitting amendments to modify their content opens up. This may result in internal disagreements, especially in light of statements made by the Madrid president regarding her wish for a "one militant, one vote" system, which contradicts Feijoo's vision.

On May 19, the party's board approved the advance of the Congress that Feijoo has designed as a starting point to reach Moncloa. Since then, he has traveled to various provinces, finally wrapping up his campaign in Málaga alongside Andalusian president Juanma Moreno, the province that offered him the most endorsements, and where Andalusia holds the most significant autonomous community.

According to the board's decision, 3,264 delegates will attend the 21st Congress, marking the highest participation in history. Of them, 584 are natural members, and 2,630 were elected today in the various provinces with representation based on the number of affiliates and the electoral results. Additionally, there are 125 members from New Generations, 40 from the PP abroad, and 10 from the organizing commission.

  1. The discussions surrounding possible reforms to the PP's primary system could potentially involve a transition from the current double-round electoral system to a single-round system or the introduction of new voting thresholds, which could have significant implications for the general news landscape.
  2. In the aftermath of Feijoo's victory, discussions surrounding policy-and-legislation, such as the proposed changes to the PP's primary system and internal democratic procedures, have generated an average of heated debates within the party.
