Spain's Political Climate: Feijóo's Joke and New Vision
Alberto Núñez Feijóo, the President of the People's Party (PP), has expressed a vision for a "different political climate" in Spain, while also addressing recent controversy surrounding his comments on vacations.
During a speech at the 73rd Fiesta del Albariño in Cambados, Pontevedra, Feijóo lightened the mood by joking, "To those who can't distinguish a joke, I would say, 'take some Albariño and rest'." This humorous remark, a reference to the famous Galician white wine, Albariño, aimed to connect culturally with his audience and emphasize the need for sensibility, responsibility, and humor in serving the country.
Feijóo's initial statement, made at the end of a press conference during the summer course closing, had provoked criticism. He had remarked that vacations are overrated for those who cannot take them, such as many self-employed people, unemployed, sick, or studying citizens. This comment, especially from the left, sparked controversy.
In a veiled criticism of the current Government, Feijóo stated that coalitions are solid, each knowing the budget they bring and not extending the previous one. He also expressed concern about the United States' trade policy, following the statement made by the president of the DO Rías Baixas, Isidro Serantes.
Feijóo believes that this new political climate would be characterized by more respect, less noise, more agreement, less calculation, more serious work, and less theater. He also emphasized the need to protect rural areas and ensure opportunities without losing the soul.
In a humorous note, Feijóo repeated a phrase often used against him by the PSOE, stating that he is not president because he doesn't want to. He later clarified that his statement about Spain having a surplus of this Government's legislature was a joke.
Feijóo also expressed support for those who have to work in August, sending much strength to them. He joked that for those who can't tell a joke, they should have an Albariño and rest.
Feijóo also agreed with Serantes that reasonable laws and reasonable tariffs are necessary. He suggested that a referendum should be held to decide the best pairing and that everything becomes a matter of trust from certain hours.
