Unauthorized Crossings at German Borders: A Crackdown by Federal Police

Buffing up border controls in the district of Vorpommern-Greifswald, Federal Police in Western Pomerania have nabbed five individuals attempting illegal entries. At the Lipno-Pasewalk border crossing, officers brought a halt to a car filled with five Turkish passengers on a Tuesday. Three of these travelers were discovered to lack valid visas, leaving them facing a one-way ticket back to Poland. The driver and co-pilot, who had the necessary papers, are now under investigation for aiding and abetting undesirable entries.

Heading to Garz on Usedom, two unauthorized Georgian migrants were apprehended. These individuals were also found without legal residency documentation in Germany. Consequently, they were sent packing to Poland. Although border checks in the Schengen area are not mandated, Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) directed enhancements due to an alarming spike in unauthorized entries.

Germany reported 112,178 unauthorized entries between January and October. This upward trend finally went into reverse in October. A month-by-month breakdown shows 14,701 unauthorized entries in August, 21,366 in September, and finally, 20,059 in October.

Revamping Border Security:

  1. Germany's Anti-unauthorized Entry Crusade: In Western Pomerania, German border forces have been instrumental in uncovering unauthorized crossings, safeguarding their neighbors, and deterring criminals.
  2. Response to Schengen Area Deficiencies: Despite the Schengen region's guidelines restricting mandatory border controls, Germany has issued special authorizations from Brussels, given the pressuring presence of unauthorized entries.
  3. Migrant Surge and Crackdown: Federal police in Hamburg and elsewhere have been relentless in their pursuit of apprehending transit migrants and their facilitators, especially at Polish and Czech borders.
  4. Investigating Aiding & Abetting: German authorities have zero tolerance for individuals who actively contribute in enabling unauthorized entries, ensuring a prompt and rigorous inquiry into their actions.
  5. Preventive Measures to Curb Irregular Migration: In a multi-layered approach, Germany has implemented various deterrents to tackle irregular migration, including random checks, improved documentation requirements, and enhanced security measures.
  6. Believing in a Safer Europe: Germany's continued commitment to border control is underpinned by the country's broader goal of ensuring and promoting security within the European Union.
