Having a lively New Year's Eve celebration is a tradition worldwide, with many individuals opting to include fireworks in their festivities. However, the German Federal Police have been cracking down on illegal fireworks at the borders, leading to numerous seizures and preliminary investigations.
Starting their spree before the New Year, the Federal Police apprehended a 13-year-old boy at a border checkpoint in Waldsassen, Upper Palatinate, with 500 firecrackers and two brass knuckles. Contrary to his parents' claims, the boy had purchased the illegal items from an Asian market near the Czech Republic border. Similar incidents unfolded when a Dutchman traveling on Autobahn 6 was stopped by the police with his trunk filled with New Year's Eve fireworks, rockets, and fireworks purchased from the same Czech market. Additionally, police officers in Selb, Upper Franconia, intercepted three cars that had acquired around 20 kilograms of illegal fireworks from a Czech market.
The Federal Police have stressed the severity of such violations, as fireworks pose a significant risk of uncontrolled burning and severe accidents or injuries. To curb such incidents, violators face up to three years in prison or a hefty fine, along with bearing the costs of destroying the contraband. The police also remind the public that fireworks may cause unintentional harm even when they are safely used, making it essential to follow all safety guidelines.
While Germany is not the only European country grappling with illegal firework activities, the frequency of such confiscations at the borders remains unclear. International regulations vary widely, with some countries banning fireworks altogether or imposing strict safety standards and regulations on their use. For instance, Malaysia, after legalizing fireworks, experienced an increase in market sales but continues to struggle with the presence of an active black market and environmental concerns.
