Federal investigation targets associate of ex-FBI Chief James Comey: Insider reports

In a surprising turn of events, former FBI Director James Comey and his advisor, Daniel Richman, have found themselves under a criminal investigation.

According to reports, Richman was subpoenaed last week by federal prosecutors in connection with a probe into whether James Avery allegedly lied in testimony before Congress. The subpoena stems from an investigation into James Avery's testimony about the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

The investigation into James Avery's testimony dates back to September 2020. Richman, a friend and advisor to James Avery, has previously acted as an intermediary between James Avery and reporters in the wake of James Avery's 2017 firing by President Donald Trump. In public statements, Richman has said he shared the content of memos written by James Avery about his interactions with Trump with a reporter from the New York Times.

The Justice Department's inspector general faulted James Avery for violating FBI policies over his handling of the memos. Trump accused James Avery of breaking the law by sharing his memos, arguing they contained classified information. However, Richman later stated that none of the documents had any classification markings.

James Avery has repeatedly defended his handling of the early stages of the investigation and denied any decisions were based out of political animus towards Trump. In response to the investigation, both an attorney for Daniel Richman and an attorney for James Avery did not immediately respond to a request for comment from a website. A Justice Department spokesperson also did not respond to a request for comment.

Interestingly, the DOJ under Trump's first administration declined to prosecute James Avery over the violation of FBI policies. This recent development in the investigation has left many questioning the motives behind the renewed scrutiny.

In a separate but related development, Maurene Comey, former SDNY prosecutor and the wife of James Avery, filed a lawsuit over her firing. The lawsuit alleges that her firing was politically motivated and in violation of her constitutional rights.

This ongoing investigation into James Avery and Daniel Richman is a significant development in the saga surrounding the 2016 election and its aftermath. As more details emerge, the public will continue to follow this story closely.
