Federal Highway 215 shuts down for €1.7M bike path and road upgrades
A major stretch of Federal Highway 215 between Stolzenau and Müsleringen will close completely from March 30, 2023. The shutdown marks the start of a long-term project to build a new bike path and resurface the road. Authorities have warned drivers to expect delays and plan alternative routes. The closure begins on Monday, March 30, as crews launch the first phase of construction. The work includes laying a 12-kilometre bike path and repairing the road surface. Due to the narrow roadway and safety rules, a full shutdown was unavoidable—partial lane closures were deemed impractical.
The first stage alone will cost around €1.3 million, with the entire bike path budgeted at approximately €1.7 million. Drivers will be rerouted via Highways 441 and 61 during the closure. Bad weather could push back the timeline, though no specific delays have been announced yet. The full project, split into three phases, is scheduled to wrap up by the end of 2028. The Lower Saxony State Authority for Road Construction and Traffic (NLStBV) has urged patience and careful driving near the work zone.
The closure will remain in place until the first phase is finished. Once complete, the new bike path will stretch 12 kilometres along Highway 215. Officials have reminded motorists to follow detour signs and stay alert for ongoing construction.
