Jagmeet Singh Steps Down as NDP Leader Following 2025 Election Defeat
Federal Election Results in Canada: Jagmeet Singh Steps Down as NDP Leader Following Significant Party Loss
In a stunning blow, Jagmeet Singh, the first person of color to lead a Federal party in Canada, has announced his resignation as leader of the New Democratic Party (NDP) following their historic defeat in the 2025 Federal election.
On Monday evening, the NDP named MP Don Davies as the interim leader, following a meeting of the NDP national council after consultation with its caucus. The decision came as the party failed to make any significant impact, securing only seven seats and approximately 6% of votes, a drastic fall from their 2021 election performance with an over 18% backing.
The election night saw Singh lose his Burnaby Central seat, a rare occurrence for a party leader. The Liberal Party's Wade Chang and the Conservative James Yan outperformed Singh, dealing a massive blow to the NDP's hopes for a comeback.
In his statement, NDP president Mary Shortall acknowledged the party's disappointing results but emphasized their commitment to creating a better Canada. The party will now prepare for a leadership race, expected to commence in the coming months.
Singh's resignation was anticipated after the NDP lost its official status in the new House of Commons due to the election results, ending up with less than the requisite 12 seats. In his address to NDP supporters in Burnaby, Singh expressed his disappointment with the election outcome.
Party analysts point to the deal Singh struck with the then minority government of Justin Trudeau in March 2022 as the key factor in the NDP's disastrous performance. The agreement, which kept the unpopular Government in power, proved a constant association for Singh throughout the campaign.
First elected to the House of Commons in February 2019 from Burnaby South, Singh entered politics in 2011, having been elected to the Ontario provincial parliament. His political career took a turbulent turn with criticisms over his stance towards Khalistani extremism. In 2013, the Indian government, led by prime minister Manmohan Singh, denied him a visa.
