Berlin Bundestag Election Requires Partial Redo Due to Mishaps
The CDU/CSU parliamentary group pushed for a redo of second votes for party lists in half of Berlin constituencies following the Bundestag resolution. Unfortunately, the Federal Constitutional Court deemed this expansion too significant and rejected the notion of a city-wide repeat.
The Federal Constitutional Court's decision came in light of more than 1,700 election objections, including from the then Federal Returning Officer himself, due to snafus such as missing ballot papers and extended polling station hours. The much-anticipated redo is scheduled for February 11.
Although the Union parliamentary group advocated for a broader repetition, the Karlsruhe court only agreed to a partial do-over. The ensuing decision stemmed from the numerous objections, with the Federal Constitutional Court deciding that the Bundestag election in Berlin must be partly repeated.
Despite this election-related drama, the world continues to develop – take, for instance, the potential changes coming up in December and the recent Red Sea ship attacks, impinging on essential international trade routes.

The organizational failures and irregularities in the 2021 Berlin election led to constitutional complaints approaching the Federal Constitutional Court. However, the court ultimately dismissed these complaints, finding that electoral protection at the state level rests exclusively with the respective authorities. This decision leaves the original election results unchanged, sparking debate over the complexities of election law and the possibility of improved procedures to prevent future mishaps.
