Federal Conservative Democratic Union (CDU) in Saarland advocates for entire federal infrastructure project to be handed over to local municipalities
In a joint statement, Saarland's CDU representatives have called for the entire 1.2 billion euros from the federal infrastructure package to be allocated to municipal infrastructure. The funds, intended for Saarland, are expected to be distributed by the state government to municipalities, cities, and districts.
The municipalities in Saarland bear the main burden of maintaining public infrastructure, making a clear focus on the municipal level crucial. With the existing transformation fund of the state, a cross-party demand for the entire 1.2 billion euros has been emphasised.
Stephan Toscani, chairman of the CDU state parliamentary fraction, Marcus Hoffeld, spokesman for the CDU mayors, and Roland Theis, CDU federal MP, have all voiced their concerns. They argue that the municipalities in Saarland, which are among the financially weakest in Germany, deserve special attention in the context of infrastructure investment.
Mayor Marcus Hoffeld emphasised the need for the funds to be directed towards schools, kindergartens, municipal roads and bridges, fire station buildings, community centers, swimming pools, and sports halls. He also highlighted the importance of this investment for the improvement of local areas, with a focus on less paperwork and more visible results.
Roland Theis, the CDU federal MP, suggested aligning the distribution of funds with the economic stimulus package of 2009, where procedures were simplified and direct awards were possible. He advocates for the funds to reach the municipal level without cuts or additional hurdles.
In a bid to speed up the process, Theis also appealed to the state government to swiftly and bureaucratically pass on the funds from the infrastructure package. He emphasised the importance of citizens seeing improvements in their local areas, with the aim of tangible benefits for the people of Saarland.
As of now, specific cities, towns, and districts in Saarland that have not yet received funds from the federal infrastructure package have not been publicly detailed. However, the CDU is advocating for the funds to be distributed equitably across the region, ensuring that all municipalities benefit from this significant investment.
