Hey there! Let's talk about Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's push for additional resources from the federal government to beef up their judicial system.

The state's Justice Minister, Jacqueline Bernhardt from The Left, has put forth a resolution titled "Pact for the Justice System's Stability - Federal Contribution" to be discussed at this week's Conference of Justice Ministers in Bad Schandau. If you aren't familiar, that's a meeting happening in a Saxon spa town from Wednesday to Friday.

Bernhardt pointed out that public prosecution offices and administrative courts are buckling under the pressure. For example, asylum cases in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern take nearly a year on average to wrap up.

The minister is hopeful about the new federal government's promise of a new pact for the justice system's stability in their coalition agreement. Bernhardt believes the key points in that agreement, like improved digitalization, streamlined processes, and workforce expansion, should be enacted ASAP. The Conference of Justice Ministers will ask Federal Minister of Justice Stefanie Hubig (SPD) to promptly provide the funds needed for personnel expansion in the judiciary.

Did you know that back in 2019, there was already a pact like this? It brought funds from the federation, and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern alone received an extra 37 positions for judges and prosecutors. Unfortunately, that program didn't continue, according to Bernhardt.

Usually, the judiciary is the responsibility of the federal states. Courts at the first and second level typically fall under the control of the federal states.

  2. As the Conference of Justice Ministers meets in Bad Schandau this week, policy-and-legislation discussions on improving digitalization, streamlined processes, and workforce expansion are expected to center around securing funds for personnel expansion in the judiciary, potentially impacting the freedom of movement of workers within EC countries, freedom to provide services, and the overall general news landscape.
