Federal authorities find it challenging to establish a mortgage fraud case against opponent of Trump, Letitia James, according to confidential sources, as reported by CNN.
In a series of developments, New York Attorney General Letitia James finds herself at the centre of multiple investigations. According to reports, Ed Martin, the head of the Justice Department's Weaponization Working Group, has taken an interest in a property owned by James in New York. Martin recently visited the property and posed for photos outside, signalling his intent to 'lay eyes' on the property. The nature of Martin's investigation remains unclear, but sources suggest it could be related to allegations of mortgage fraud. Since May, prosecutors have been probing whether James knowingly made false statements on a loan application by indicating a property in Virginia as her primary residence, when in reality, she stated in emails to a mortgage broker that 'this property WILL NOT be my primary residence.' Meanwhile, a grand jury investigation has convened in Albany, New York, looking into deprivation of rights against former President Donald Trump. The US Attorney's office for the Eastern District of Virginia has declined to comment on any potential involvement in this investigation. The investigation into James has not been without controversy. Trump has privately and angrily complained about James for months, and has urged DOJ officials to investigate her aggressively. The US Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia is reportedly facing pressure to indict James from Martin and Bill Pulte, the director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency. James' attorney, Abbe Lowell, has slammed the administration's 'revenge tour,' stating that 'it's no surprise they are having trouble finding an objective and law-abiding prosecutor who would ignore the facts and the evidence to manufacture sham charges.' It's worth noting that James won a civil case last year against the Trump Organization and President Trump over allegations of faulty business practices. The New York appeals court panel upheld the finding that Trump is liable for fraud, but threw out the nearly half-billion dollar penalty. The investigation into James has involved interviews with dozens of witnesses. As the story unfolds, it remains to be seen how these investigations will impact James and her role as New York Attorney General. ABC News first reported this story.
