Fiery Chats and Shattered Dreams: The Unsettling Sweep of LA Car Washes

On a Sunday afternoon, Noemi Ciau dropped a pizza at Westchester Hand Wash for her husband, a worker there. Little did she know, this would be their last meeting, as the man was snatched away by immigration agents shortly after. This incident is but one of many that have rocked Los Angeles and Orange counties recently, as several car washes have fallen victim to an aggressive crackdown.

As Noemi shared her heartbreak at a conference organized by CLEAN Carwash Worker Center, she revealed the frustration of relying on her husband for her children's care, now that he's gone. "He was my backbone," she lamented. "Who's going to pick up my kids? Who's going to take them to music class?" she questioned, her voice quivering with emotion.

At least 26 hardworking individuals have been swept up in these operations, the majority being employees. Of these, one unfortunate customer was also nabbed during a raid at Culver City Express Hand Car Wash and Detail. The dramatic increase in immigration raids has sent shockwaves throughout these communities, leaving families unsettled and empty-handed,struggling to make ends meet.

According to CLEAN, at least five car washes have been targeted, including the aforementioned Westchester Hand Wash and Culver City car wash. Strikingly, both locations have been hit twice, leaving their businesses in disarray. Westchester Hand Wash, for example, can no longer operate since six of its workers were taken, and many more are too scared to continue working there. Some employees at the establishment had been employed for more than two decades, creating a shocking disruption to their lives.

At Culver City car wash, federal agents blocked exits with their vehicles, creating tense moments and causing significant distress among the workers and their families. One particularly heart-wrenching incident involved 11-year-old Brian Vasquez, who watched helplessly as his father was pulled away by immigration agents.

The ongoing raids have led to a wave of confusion and fear among communities, with families unsure of their loved ones' whereabouts. Arturo Vasquez, Brian's father, was taken to a detention facility in Texas, leaving his sons deeply traumatized.

This senseless and widespread disruption isn't limited to a few favored locations. Galaxy Auto Detail in Downey, for instance, has also fallen victim to these raids. The owner was left sufficiently shaken, having to shut down her business due to the lack of employees willing to work amidst the uncertainty.

The Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents behind these actions have been accused of ignoring identification as they grab workers without due process, leading CLEAN's executive director, Flor Melendrez, to label these events as "kidnappings." To add to the chaos, trolls on social media have posted hateful, anti-immigrant comments in response to footage shared online of these arrests, causing further distress to those affected.

ICE has yet to respond to requests for comment regarding their actions. As emotions run high and families continue to demand answers, the situation remains fraught with tension and uncertainty.

If you'd like to lend support to these affected families, CLEAN provides resources on how to help[1]. Let's stand together to protect and uplift our communities in need.
