In a move that has sparked controversy, President Donald Trump has initiated a plan to take over the Washington, D.C. police department and deploy National Guard troops. Approximately 800 D.C. National Guardsmen have been mobilised, with hundreds more from other states arriving, alongside 500 newly deployed federal agents from immigration and other agencies patrolling the streets [1].

This takeover, which uses emergency powers to requisition the Metropolitan Police Department, is justified by the White House citing "out-of-control" violent crime in D.C. However, this justification is contradicted by both city and federal crime statistics showing a significant decline in crime rates. Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser has stated that the city is at a 30-year low for violent crime [2].

Many legal experts question the federal government’s authority to impose such a takeover, as fluctuations in local crime rates do not constitute an emergency sufficient to override local control. The use of National Guard forces and federal agents raises potential legal issues such as violations of the Posse Comitatus Act, which limits military involvement in domestic law enforcement [1].

Beyond crime, the takeover has also been criticized as a federal method to undermine D.C.’s local laws protecting immigrants. There are concerns that the increased federal law enforcement presence could lead to aggressive policing with little local accountability, as seen in similar recent operations in other U.S. cities [1].

In a recent turn of events, Attorney General Pam Bondi has been appointed to take command of the Metropolitan Police Department, while DEA Administrator Terry Cole will serve as the interim federal commissioner of the force [1].

The seven-day law enforcement effort in Washington, D.C. is being led by the U.S. Park Police and includes personnel from multiple departments [1]. House Judiciary Committee Ranking Democrat Rep. Jamie Raskin has introduced a resolution to reverse the state of local emergency in Washington, D.C. [3].

In a surprising twist, the Supreme Court has been formally asked to overturn the landmark same-sex marriage ruling [4]. This development, unrelated to the federal intervention, further adds to the complex political landscape in the nation's capital.
