Federal authorities accuse a judge of wrongdoing in a significant deportation case, lodging a conduct allegation with the appropriate department.

The Justice Department, under Attorney General Pam Bondi, has filed a misconduct complaint against U.S. District Judge James Boasberg, accusing him of making improper comments about President Donald Trump during a March 11 meeting of the Judicial Conference of the United States.

The complaint alleges that Boasberg warned at the meeting that the Trump administration might disregard federal court rulings—including those he had made regarding the deportation of Venezuelan migrants to El Salvador—and that such disregard could trigger a “constitutional crisis.” These remarks were characterized by the Justice Department as an attempt to improperly influence Chief Justice John Roberts and other judges and as undermining the integrity and impartiality of the federal judiciary.

This complaint arises amid ongoing clashes between Judge Boasberg and the Trump administration over immigration policies. Boasberg had issued rulings blocking or delaying some of the administration’s deportation actions under a wartime immigration law, particularly in cases involving Venezuelan migrants sent to El Salvador’s CECOT prison. The Trump administration has aggressively pushed back against federal judges adjudicating immigration cases, with President Trump publicly calling for Boasberg’s impeachment.

Filing a misconduct complaint against a sitting federal judge is rare and entails a long review process. Legal experts have suggested the Trump administration may face difficulty proving that Boasberg violated judicial rules simply by making critical comments in a judicial meeting, which is generally expected to be a candid forum among judges about threats to judicial authority.

The misconduct complaint asks for Boasberg’s Alien Enemies Act case to be reassigned to another judge while the investigation proceeds. The complaint also asks for disciplinary action to be imposed, including a public reprimand and referral to the Judicial Conference for consideration of impeachment-related recommendations, if the committee finds willful misconduct.

The Justice Department's move comes as the Trump administration faces growing criticism over its handling of immigration cases. The misconduct is alleged to have occurred during a judicial conference in March, and Boasberg didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. The conference wasn't open to the public, and the misconduct complaint states that Boasberg's conduct violates litigants' trust in an impartial judiciary and falls below the standards that safeguard the integrity of the judiciary and public confidence in that integrity.

The misconduct complaint marks a deepening conflict between the judicial branch and the Trump administration over immigration enforcement, judicial independence, and the respect for court orders. This legal and political tension may have significant implications for the separation of powers and the administration of justice in immigration-related cases.
