Stride with Caution in Cologne's Streets
Cologne, Germany - Approximately half of Cologne's residents don't feel secure when stepping out their front door!
This alarming statistic emerged from an ADAC survey of 16 major cities, and Cologne ranks among the least secure when it comes to walking the streets. In fact, only 34% of residents feel at ease, a noticeable decrease from the 37% recorded in last year's survey.
Rising Anxiety Among Cologne's Pedestrians
The ADAC attributes the increasing pedestrian anxiety to criticism of infrastructure and other road users' conduct. Roman Suthold from ADAC Nordrhein reveals that "Cologne's pedestrian traffic has been neglected by politicians and administrators for years. The accumulated issues cannot be solved overnight, leading to persistent frustration."
However, Cologne seems to be making strides: the city hired a pedestrian traffic officer in March 2022, is aiming to approach traffic projects from a holistic standpoint, and is planning to tackle pedestrian traffic issues with immediate solutions at the site. Despite this, Suthold notes that the announced pedestrian traffic strategy for Cologne remains absent.
A City Divided by Fear and Safety
While Cologne ranks low on the safety scale, Potsdam boasts a staggering 66% of residents who feel safe on the streets. Munich follows closely with 64%. The survey reveals marked variations in safety perceptions across major German cities, with size seemingly having no bearing on pedestrian anxiety.
Pedestrians in Cologne share concerns about e-scooter drivers' behavior, with the percentage complaining about their reckless road conduct rising from 48% in 2021 to an alarming 55% in 2023.

Redefining Cologne's Pedestrian Experience
To better serve its pedestrians, Cologne could consider implementing various measures:
- Traffic Light Speed Cameras: Enforcing speed limits and deterring drivers from endangering pedestrians by installing traffic light speed cameras.
- Geofencing Technology: Adopting geofencing technology to impose speed limits in urban areas and reduce instances of reckless driving.
- Clear Speed Limit Signs: Improving visibility by ensuring speed limit signs are easily recognizable and unobstructed.
- Designated Pedestrian Zones: Creating designated pedestrian zones with reduced speed limits, providing a sense of safety for pedestrians.
- Public Awareness Campaigns: Employing public awareness drives to educate and raise awareness about the importance of respecting traffic rules and pedestrian safety.
- Regular Monitoring: Enforcing speed limits and deterring red light violations through regular traffic light checks by the police.
- Collaboration with Research Institutions: Collaborating with research institutions, such as the Würzburg Institute for Traffic Sciences (WIVW), to gain insights into pedestrian-driver interaction and develop effective safety strategies.
By adopting these measures, Cologne demonstrates its commitment to making walking in its streets safer and more secure for its residents.
