Michael Theurer Steps Down: FDP's Chairperson for Baden-Württemberg is Leaving Politics
Here's the scoop:
Michael Theurer, a seasoned player in German politics for over 40 years, has announced his resignation from his role as the Chairman of the FDP in Baden-Württemberg and State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Transport and Representative for Rail Transport effective September 1st. He'll also vacate his seat on the FDP federal board.
Why, you ask? Theurer's dream of joining the board of the Federal Bank necessitates the move as he needs to maintain neutrality in his new position. Despite bidding farewell, he'll remain a proud party member and maintain a strong connection with the regional branch.
The passionate advocate for liberal values acknowledges the difficult departure from politics but is excited about his upcoming opportunity. He urged his party comrades to keep advocating for their values, especially in troubled times when authoritarian forces might prevail.
A veteran in the political arena, Theurer has been the head of the South West Liberals since 2013 and was re-elected with an impressive 78% of the votes last summer. An economics graduate from Tübingen, he served as the mayor of Horb am Neckar from 1995 to 2009. He was a member of the Baden-Württemberg state parliament from 2001 to 2009 and an MEP from 2009 to 2017. Since 2017, he's been a member of the Bundestag.
Theurer's deputy and FDP parliamentary group leader praised his "selfless service" to the regional branch and expressed sorrow about his impending departure. The state party leadership has vowed to build upon the success established by Theurer.
No candidates have emerged yet to replace Theurer. The state board meeting in mid-September will discuss future plans, and a party conference scheduled for early January will elect a new chairperson. The party statutes allow for a member survey prior to the election if demanded, but it won't be legally binding.
The Federal Ministry of Transport will need to find a new Representative for Rail Transport following Theurer's departure. The parties involved will consider their options carefully before choosing a fitting successor.
