Bye-Bye, Michael Theurer: FDP Bids Adieu to Its Leader

Bid the FDP goodbye, as they hunt for a new leader following the announcement of Michael Theurer's departure on September 1st. This economist, who's been leading the pack since 2013, is stepping down due to his new appointment on the Bundesbank's board.

As the Parliamentary State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Transport and the man behind the state's rail transport, Theurer, aged 57, has been a staple in the party. His resignation comes after he officially announced it in late July, citing the need for neutrality in his new role.

Born in Tübingen, Theurer served as the mayor of Horb am Neckar from 1995 to 2009. He then moved on to the Baden-Württemberg state parliament from 2001 to 2009, before joining the European Parliament from 2017 until his current role in the German federal parliament, the Bundestag, which he's held since 2017.

With Theurer's exit, there's a power vacuum within the FDP. The party is represented in Baden-Württemberg with 18 MPs, who can spend €10,000 a month on staff[2]. The battle for control of the party is on, with several contenders vying for the top spot, including Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann and Wolfgang Kubicki[3].

The federal government is looking for a steady hand to fill Theurer's shoes. Stay tuned for updates on who will take charge of the FDP in Baden-Württemberg.
