FDP's Spokesperson Stands Firm on cannabis Legalization Amid Criticism

In the face of continuing criticism, the FDP's drug policy spokesperson, Kristine Lütke, has unwaveringly defended the planned cannabis legalization in Germany. Addressing the German Press Agency, Lütke asserted that the prohibition strategy had failed, and a paradigm shift was essential. The criticism stems from prominent voices in the police, judiciary, and medical fields expressing concerns about the plan. A hearing on Monday will gather experts and associations in the Bundestag's Health Committee to discuss the issue.

Lütke reaffirmed that the aim of the FDP-led coalition is to prioritize youth protection and health. She argued that cannabis is already commonly consumed, and black market products can be contaminated with harmful substances, such as hairspray, lead, and synthetic cannabinoids. Promising education, prevention, and controlled home cultivation or cannabis clubs to combat illegal sales, she expressed hope in pushing back the black market supply.

Under current plans, the SPD and Greens seek to pass their cannabis legalization bill in the Bundestag by the end of the year. The legislation intends to remove cannabis from the Narcotics Act's list of prohibited substances, permit possession of 25 grams for adults over 18, and allow up to three plants for private cultivation. Cannabis clubs would also allow members to jointly cultivate and distribute the drug within their community.

The Bundestag's Health Committee will host Monday's hearing, inviting specialists and associations to discuss the FDP's cannabis legalization plan. Emphasizing a focus on youth protection and health, Lütke emphasized concerns over black market contamination, with harmful substances like hairspray, lead, and synthetic cannabinoids present in such products.

Insights: Key Arguments and Controversies

Supporters of the FDP's plan argue that legalizing cannabis supports personal liberty, promotes safer consumption, and could yield economic benefits. However, critics raise concerns about youth protection, health risks due to black market contamination, and international and EU law compliance. Political divisions persist, with potential consequences for coalition scenarios and internal conflicts within political alliances.
