After California enacted a statewide ban on brominated vegetable oil (BVO) in October 2023 under the California Food Safety Act, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is thinking about joining the movement. James Jones, the FDA's deputy commissioner for food policies and programs, mentioned the agency was considering banning the dark red, oily chemical used as an emulsifier in citrus-flavored beverages to prevent flavors from separating. BVO is also found in flame retardants.
Verifying ingredient lists before purchasing can help those who wish to avoid BVO, given public comments are being accepted until January 17, 2024. Many companies have already removed BVO due to consumer pressure after a 2012 petition with over 200,000 signatures brought the issue to light.
