FCI coach Wittmann swiftly terminates unexpected bonus payment controversy: "There was a substantial advantage in it"
FC Ingolstadt and Jahn Regensburg Draw in Thrilling Derby
The first matchday of the 3. Liga season saw a fiery derby between FC Ingolstadt and Jahn Regensburg, ending in a 1-1 draw. The Audi Sportpark was filled with 9583 spectators, eager to witness the intense rivalry between the two regional powerhouses.
The game was a test of mental and physical strength for both teams, with FC Ingolstadt aiming to capitalise on a less pressured season compared to previous campaigns. Despite their ambitions, the hosts found themselves on the wrong end of a last-minute equalizer, a result that left them disappointed but focused on the next game.
Jahn Regensburg, who had undergone many player changes after relegation, saw the draw as a positive sign of their improved squad strength and resilience. The visitors' equalizer was scored by Robin Ziegele, who received an assist from an inadvertent clearance by FCI captain Lukas Frödes.
In goal for FC Ingolstadt, Markus Ponath made two excellent saves during the match, one against a header from Lucas Hermes and another against a low shot from Jahn captain Christian Kühlwetter. Ponath, who started as the number one goalkeeper in the first game of the season, found starting in such a high-profile derby in front of a large crowd to be a great feeling. He was also cheered on by his girlfriend, family, and many friends and acquaintances during the match.
Marcel Costly shone in his more offensive role for FC Ingolstadt, while Ivo Grlic, sports director of the club, drew a positive conclusion from the match, acknowledging the team's potential but noting that they are not consistent enough yet. Jonas Scholz made a strong impression as a centre back for FC Ingolstadt, contributing to the opening goal and stabilizing the defence.
In midfield, FCI goal scorer Max Besuschkow was a strategic force, while Linus Rosenlöcher also had a strong performance as left back for FC Ingolstadt. Yann Sturm, who had impressed in pre-season, couldn't make an impact in the league opener for the club.
Besuschkow expressed disappointment but acknowledged that the result was deserved based on Jahn Regensburg's second-half performance. Berkay Öztürk stepped in capably for the injured Dennis Kaygin and made a surprise start for FC Ingolstadt.
FC Ingolstadt coach Sabrina Wittmann praised Ponath's performance in goal, while also expressing excitement about the team's performance, despite the disappointing result. She looked forward to seeing more from her team in the future.
The draw serves as a reminder that both teams have high pressure and expectations moving forward in the season, with the derby intensity set to continue throughout the campaign.
