In a recent turn of events, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chair, Brendan Carr, has threatened to investigate ABC's daytime talk show, 'The View,' and late-night comedy series, 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!', after Jimmy Kimmel was suspended for lying about the political affiliation of the murderer of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk.

The controversy started when Kimmel claimed that the murderer was a MAGA Republican, a statement that was later found to be untrue. This led to a public outcry, with many conservatives feeling excluded from major networks. The FCC's mission is to ensure that networks using public airwaves are not discriminating against half of the country by banning their viewpoints from programming.

Carr's threat comes as a response to Kimmel's misinformation, stating that companies can change Kimmel's conduct or face further action from the FCC. This is not the first time Carr has shown his support for conservatives. He has been vocal about the need for a more balanced representation of views on publicly-funded airwaves.

The controversy surrounding 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' did not end with his suspension. Moving trucks were spotted outside the studio in California, suggesting that the show is packing up. ABC announced the cancellation of the show this week, but the FCC's involvement in the decision remains unclear.

The public airwaves, regulated by the FCC, belong to the American people, not Jimmy Kimmel or ABC. Over the past half century, the big three networks and PBS were traditionally viewed as more trustworthy due to their reliance on government. However, today, they are indistinguishable from cable news networks like CNN or MSNBC.

A study by the Media Research Center showed that ABC's 'The View' had 102 liberal guests between January and August of 2025 and zero Republican guests. This imbalance in representation has been a topic of concern for many, with the rest of America wanting some say in the control of public airwaves.

The cancellation of 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' and the potential investigation into 'The View' are seen by some Democrats as intimidation or going after ABC. However, Carr maintains that his actions are in the best interest of fair and balanced representation on public airwaves.

Meanwhile, a recent poll shows that only 8% of Democrat voters believe that Charlie Kirk's assassin is left-leaning, despite evidence to the contrary. This further highlights the need for balanced representation and fair reporting on public airwaves.

David Marcus, a columnist living in West Virginia and the author of 'Charade: The COVID Lies That Crushed A Nation,' has been vocal about the need for change in the media landscape. The FCC's actions, he believes, are giving conservatives a voice that has long been missing from major, publicly subsidized networks.

After ABC cancelled 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!', the responsibility for oversight and regulation would typically remain with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) at the federal level. The cancellation decision and any related broadcasts fall under ABC and federal media regulatory oversight rather than state public broadcasting supervision. There is no public broadcaster or regulatory body in California directly overseeing this specific show after ABC’s cancellation.
