FC Zurich Parts Ways with Coach Van der Gaag After Player Dissatisfaction
FC Zurich has parted ways with coach Mitchell van der Gaag after a brief five-month tenure. The Dutchman's departure comes amidst player dissatisfaction with the team's playing style.
Van der Gaag's reign ended after just nine Swiss Super League matches. His dismissal follows a team meeting where players expressed their preference for a more attacking and attractive approach to the game. The coach had failed to align his training methods with the club's desired playing philosophy, according to FC Zurich president Ancillo Canepa. Canepa also cited a lack of energy and passion from van der Gaag as contributing factors.
Stepping into the interim role is assistant coach Dennis Hediger. Despite his lack of Super League head-coaching experience, Hediger has been tasked with leading the team through crucial fixtures against Young Boys, Basel, and Lausanne. The Swiss coach has previously led youth teams at FC Basel and FC Zurich, but this will be his first opportunity to manage at the highest level.
FC Zurich begins a new chapter under interim coach Dennis Hediger. The team faces challenging fixtures against top opponents, with the interim coach looking to implement a more attacking style of play. The club aims to rediscover its form and climb the Super League table.
