In a thrilling turn of events, 1. FC Saarbrücken has secured a place in the relegation playoffs to the 2nd Bundesliga following a 2:1 home victory over Borussia Dortmund's reserve team, Dortmund II. The match, played at the sold-out Ludwigspark stadium, was attended by 15,303 spectators.

The game started with a tense atmosphere, as both teams seemed nervous. However, Saarbrücken managed to recover after 15 minutes, setting the stage for an exciting encounter.

The first goal of the match came in the 34th minute, scored by Julian Hettwer for Borussia Dortmund II. The team from Dortmund maintained their lead until the 67th minute, when Kai Brünker equalized for Saarbrücken.

The momentum shifted in Saarbrücken's favour, and Patrick Schmidt scored the decisive goal with his first goal of the season in the 86th minute. However, it was later determined to be offside, leaving the score at 1:1.

Despite the offside call, Saarbrücken's spirit remained high. Prince Aning had an opportunity to make it 2:1 for the home team, but the chance went unrewarded. The referee's whistle signaled the end of the game after 94 minutes, with the score still at 1:1.

The relegation games for Saarbrücken are set for May 23rd (home game) and May 27th (away game). The team's opponent in the relegation playoff in the 2. Bundesliga will be FC St. Pauli.

Heribert Ohlmann, President of the Saarland Football Association, praised the team's performance in the 3rd Liga. He also acknowledged the strong performance of Ingolstadt and Hannover II, which contributed to Energie Cottbus's simultaneous loss, securing Saarbrücken's relegation spot.
