FC Porto's Villas-Boas extends a handshake to fellow club member: "Accept the missteps..."
In a candid interview in the May edition of FC Porto's magazine 'Dragões', André Villas-Boas, the club's president, acknowledged the underwhelming season of the blue-and-whites and took responsibility for the shortcomings. Addressing the ongoing fight for 3rd place in the Liga with Sporting Braga, Villas-Boas asserted his commitment to restoring the glory days of the Porto fans.
"It's on my shoulders to take blame for the setbacks and chart a course toward a brighter future...Yet, those who believe in grit and competition, those who don't shy from a fight, are persistent. And that's where we stand now, ready to reclaim the joy of every Porto fan. That's my deepest desire," Villas-Boas shared, pointing to the financial recovery of the club.
"FC Porto has managed to meet all UEFA quarterly controls and achieved positive results, despite the absence of Champions League revenues, due to a massive collective effort," he disclosed.
Elsewhere in the conversation, Villas-Boas addressed the results of the forensic audit during Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa's tenure, emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability. "The legal action aims to rectify the damages brought about by illegitimate powers. A credible, equitable, sustainable, and respectable future can only be constructed through this resolute but transparent approach, one that aligns with the values of our foundation and history," Villas-Boas explained, having won only the Supertaça in his inaugural year.
Amid the critical year, it's worth noting the FC Porto president's focus on data-driven decision-making and asset preservation. However, the club's league performance has been less than stellar, sitting 4th as of April 2025, trailing Braga and considerably behind leaders Benfica. The team has also been winless against both Benfica and Sporting, including a humiliating 4-1 defeat at Estádio da Luz.
The president's future plans for the club hinge on rectifying the football team's slide while ensuring financial stability. His early gambits on data analytics and asset protection offer promising prospects, but the long-term success will depend on resolving the coaching dilemma and fostering squad unity.
Meanwhile, controversies continue to swirl around manager Martín Anselmi, with fan outrage and player resistance emerging post-Benfica defeat. As Villas-Boas grapples with these challenges, he remains steadfast in his vision of restoring FC Porto to its former glory.
