FC Porto securingly extends agreement with Alan Varela, locking him in until 2030.

FC Porto midfielder Alan Varela has agreed to extend his contract with the Portuguese club until June 2030, as announced on Thursday. The 23-year-old Argentine, who joined the third-placed team in the 2024/25 season from Boca Juniors, has seen his release clause increased from €65 million to €75 million.

Having arrived at FC Porto in the summer of 2023 for €8 million, Varela has cemented his place in the starting lineup, scoring two goals and providing six assists over the past two seasons. In the 2024/25 season, Varela was the most regular player for Porto, amassing 44 appearances across various competitions.

The subsequent Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira victory added to a previously won Taça de Portugal, marking Varela's contributions to the team's success since his arrival in European football. Prior to his stint with FC Porto, he had won a league title, a Copa Argentina, two Copa de la Liga, and a Supercopa at Boca Juniors from 2020 to 2023.

André Villas-Boas, the club's president, praised the ease of negotiations and expressed pride in retaining one of the team's key players. His teammate Rodrigo Mora was also among the recent renewals at the club. Spanish sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta acknowledged that talks with Varela had been ongoing for several months and hailed this renewal as a launchpad for FC Porto's professional football project in the 2025/26 season.

In his statement, Varela's extension underscores FC Porto's commitment to maintaining a strong core of players, ultimately securing the team's stability for future seasons. As one of the captains, Varela's leadership role and tactical contribution from the midfield are vital for executing the team's strategies effectively, while also motivating the younger players on the pitch.

FC Porto's midfielder Alan Varela, having made a significant impact in the 2024/25 season, is set to continue his football journey in European-leagues with the Premier-League ambitions of the club. With his extension, the Argentine player will be instrumental in Porto's pursuit of success, bolstering the club's Sports projects for the upcoming seasons.
