FC Luzern Thrashes Grasshoppers 6-0, Secures Safety in Swiss Super League
FC Luzern handed Grasshoppers a heavy 6-0 defeat, leaving them four points clear of the relegation zone. The match was effectively over by halftime, with Luzern leading 3-0.
The hosts opened the scoring from the penalty spot, with Matteo Di Giusto converting. Julian von Moos then curled in a free kick to make it 2-0 before halftime. Di Giusto added a second, this time with an overhead kick, to make it 3-0 at the break. The match was all but over.
In the second half, Grasshoppers' defence crumbled. Grbić finished off a counterattack to make it 5-0, and Kevin Spadanuda added a sixth just two minutes later. The trainer, Gerald Scheiblehner, will have his work cut out to lift his side out of the relegation zone.
Grasshoppers now face FC Winterthur next Saturday, while FC Luzern plays FC Zurich at the same time. Despite the heavy defeat, Grasshoppers remain four points clear of last-place FC Winterthur. However, they will need to improve significantly to avoid relegation.
