Relegation looms: Erzgebirge Aue loses in Mannheim - FC Erzgebirge Aue's relegation fears grow after late heartbreak vs. Mannheim
FC Erzgebirge Aue's relegation fears deepened after a 2–1 defeat to SV Waldhof Mannheim. The loss extended their winless streak to over three months, leaving survival in Germany's 3. Liga looking increasingly unlikely. With only eight games left, the club now faces a battle to avoid a double-digit points gap from safety.
Aue took an early lead when Marvin Stefaniak found the net in the 44th minute. But their advantage lasted just minutes into the second half, as Lovis Bierschenk equalised for Mannheim in the 50th.
The decisive moment came in stoppage time. Terrence Boyd's 90th-minute goal sealed the win for the visitors, though controversy surrounded the play. Replays suggested a possible offside, but with no VAR in the 3. Liga, the call stood.
This defeat leaves Aue without a win since December. The club's financial struggles have compounded their on-field woes, forcing cost-cutting since 2022/23. Measures included player sales, wage reductions, and a smaller squad, all while maintaining their professional setup. Management has also focused on youth development and new sponsorship deals to stabilise finances.
Looking ahead, Aue aims to rebuild with a budget near €10 million for 2025/26. The board has briefed staff on long-term plans through 2027, targeting an immediate return if relegation is confirmed.
The result leaves Aue on the brink of dropping out of the 3. Liga. Even with eight matches remaining, the points gap to safety may soon reach double figures. Off the pitch, the club continues restructuring, with promotion back to the third tier now the primary focus.
