Ministry agrees: Energy can start renovation measures - FC Energie Cottbus fast-tracks stadium upgrades for second-division push
FC Energie Cottbus has received the green light to begin modernising its LEAG Energie Stadion ahead of schedule. The early start, approved by Brandenburg's Ministry of Education, Youth, and College Football, will help the club meet licensing requirements for the second division. The state has also allocated €2 million in funding to support the upgrades.
The club had originally planned to begin renovations on January 30, 2026, as part of its push for promotion. However, Steffen Freiberg, Brandenburg's Minister for Education, Youth and Sport, intervened to accelerate the process. His ministry's approval allows work to commence as early as this Friday.
The upgrades are essential for compliance with German Football League (DFL) and German Football Association (DFB) standards. Without them, the stadium would fail to secure the necessary licence for second-division play. The state's €2 million contribution, earmarked in the 2025–2026 budget, will help fund the required modernisation.
