Despite the ongoing friendship with Uli Hoeneß, the bond with FC Bayern Munich seems strained: Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt, the club's long-time physician, is struggling to comprehend the club's present state.
The 82-year-old Müller-Wohlfahrt has moved on from his former employer, having closed shop at Säbener Straße in 2020. Now stationed in Munich's city center, he continues to serve as the go-to doctor for numerous athletes dealing with injuries. However, the Ostfriese himself appears to be wrestling with the aftermath of his departure from the German record champions.
"Ever questioned why there were no standing ovations, no brass band, no farewell gift, no meal, no gesture?" Müller-Wohlfahrt asks the "Bild" newspaper, seemingly questioning the club's decision. "The answers can only be given by the club," he adds, as his departure from the club lacked the formalities associated with professional athletes leaving the team.
Müller-Wohlfahrt's relationship with the old guard surrounding FCB maker Uli Hoeneß stays amicable, as "a friendly relationship still exists." Nevertheless, he finds the club evolving, stating, "many players no longer identify with the club."
"FC Bayern was family," he nostalgically recalls, "but it's transformed into a large corporation."
Over the years, Müller-Wohlfahrt served as a significant image-shaper for FC Bayern. His flowing hair and medical case became synonymous with the club. Though the club has become a significant part of his life, he identifies with it deeply, internalizing the motto, 'Mia san Mia.' Through his work, he feels intimately connected to the history, development, and success of the club.
Müller-Wohlfahrt's departure in the summer of 2020 brought about human disappointments, he admits, revealing that he ended his tenure as chief doctor voluntarily. A previous spat with coach Pep Guardiola in 2015 preceded this, as Guardiola publicly berated him, accused him of causing the team's injury woes, and even placed blame on him for the Champions League quarter-final defeat against FC Porto. Müller-Wohlfahrt felt unsupported by the club's management, in his eyes, justifiably so. He resigned the following day, only to return to the club in 2017 after Guardiola left for Manchester City.
