FC Barcelona's Iconic Jersey: A Century of Blaugrana History

FC Barcelona's iconic jersey colors, blaugrana, have a rich history dating back to the club's founding in 1899. The colors were inspired by founder Joan Gamper's former club, FC Barcelona, and traditional Catalan colors. The definitive colors were adopted in 1899, with variations due to fabric availability until they were unified in the 1950s.

The blaugrana colors also have an international connection. They are believed to have been inspired by the colors of the club where founder Joan Gamper played before coming to Barcelona. This pleased the British founders and reminded German friend Otto of his city's colors.

Barcelona's jersey has seen various sponsorship deals over the years. From 2006 to 2011, the club had Unicef as a sponsor, with Barcelona paying the UN organization instead of receiving money. This unique arrangement ended in 2011, and Barcelona signed a five-year contract worth €33 million per year with Qatar Foundation, later replaced by Qatar Airways.

The club was initially resistant to putting ads on the mythical jersey. However, in the early 2010s, Barcelona began to feature sponsors on their jerseys. There was an exception in 1990 when the second jersey had a sponsor during a Japan tour, and the money collected was used to sign Ronald Koeman.

The vertical stripes on the Barcelona jersey were introduced in 1910. The current design of three blue stripes and two red or grenadine stripes was adopted in 1915 and has remained largely unchanged since.

FC Barcelona's jersey is more than just a sports uniform; it's a symbol of the club's history and identity. From its origins inspired by founder Joan Gamper's former club to its unique sponsorship deals and iconic design, the Barcelona jersey is a testament to the club's rich heritage.
