FC Augsburg secures the signing of Sandro Wagner, hailed as the ideal choice by club officials.
Sandro Wagner Officially Joins FC Augsburg as Head Coach
German football veteran Sandro Wagner has made his debut as a head coach in the Bundesliga, following his appointment by FC Augsburg, effective immediately. The 37-year-old former national player and assistant to national team coach Julian Nagelsmann has signed a contract until 2028 with the FCA.
With this move, Wagner embarks on his first stint as a top-flight head coach, replacing Jess Thorup who was let go after a season analysis by the club. The FCA, now under Wagner's leadership, aims to build on its 12th-place finish in the previous season and secure a more stable position in the Bundesliga.
Wagner's decision to vacate his assistant position with the German national team after the Nations League final tournament (4th to 8th June) to pursue the role of head coach had been announced last month. Wagner expressed enthusiasm over the opportunity, stating, "The FCA has a clear philosophy that aligns well with my playing philosophy. I am looking forward to working together with the club."
A native of Würzburg, Bavaria, Wagner boasts an impressive playing career with teams like FC Bayern Munich, TSG Hoffenheim, Hertha BSC, and Werder Bremen. Throughout his tenure as a striker, he secured three Bundesliga titles and two DFB-Pokal trophies[2][3]. His journey as a coach began with SV Werder Bremen's youth team, and he served as an assistant to Germany's national team coach, Julian Nagelsmann, prior to this appointment[1][4].
The FCA's managing director, Michael Ströll, expressed confidence in Wagner's ability to lead the team, citing his ambition, meticulous approach, and ability to inspire a team with his passion[2][5].
Sandro Wagner's experience and commitment to the club's vision make him an exciting addition to the FC Augsburg coaching staff, as the club sets its sights on improving its performance and stability in the Bundesliga.
