Former National Striker Sandro Wagner Takes Reins as FC Augsburg's New Head Coach

Sandro Wagner, a seasoned Bundesliga player and former assistant to the German national team coach, has officially been appointed as the head coach of FC Augsburg. The club made the announcement on Tuesday, confirming Wagner's contract, which extends until 2028.

Having worked alongside Julian Nagelsmann, Wagner marks his first appearance as a head coach in the Bundesliga with this new role. His previous coaching experience has been focused on a successful promotion of the SpVgg Unterhaching team to Germany's third league in 2023.

Wagner announced his departure from the German Football Association (DFB) earlier this year, aiming to land a head coach position. "I am convinced that the task at FC Augsburg is the right step," Wagner stated. He commended the FCA's clear philosophy and conducive environment, emphasizing his youthful ambitions to develop alongside the club.

Augsburg's managing director, Michael Ströll, expressed his enthusiasm over Wagner's appointment. "Sandro is ambitious and committed to our FCA's direction," Ströll said. "His track record of improving teams and developing players makes him a valuable addition to our squad."

The FCA decided to terminate the contract of former coach Jess Thorup after a comprehensive season evaluation. Thorup, who had led the team since October 2023 following the dismissal of Enrico Maaßen, saw his contract run until 2026.
