Mert Kömür, a 19-year-old rising star at FC Augsburg, has extended his contract with the club until 2029, signalling Augsburg's dedication to nurturing their homegrown players. Kömür joined the Paul Renz Academy in 2019 and has since made a successful transition into professional football at FCA, earning his place through hard work and dedication.

Michael Strohl, the FCA managing director, expressed pride in Kömür, stating, "We are proud to be able to bind him to FC Augsburg in the long term. He is a flagship for our approach and shows the way young players can go here." Kömür himself considers himself a flagship for the club's approach to developing young players.

The new season, 2025-2026, is anticipated to be a significant one for Kömür, under the guidance of new coach Sandro Wagner. Wagner and FC Augsburg are focused on promoting homegrown talent and integrating them into the first team, aiming to build a competitive squad based on youth development.

Kömür's progression is a testament to the club's successful youth advancement strategy. His previous performances, including a remarkable athletic leap in a match against St. Pauli, have caught the attention of fans and analysts alike. The young player made his Bundesliga debut at the age of 18 in April 2024 and has since made a total of 24 appearances, scoring three goals.

FC Augsburg will kick off their preparations for the new season with internal performance tests on Thursday and their first warm-up game against district league team TSV Gersthofen on Saturday. The team, under Wagner's leadership, will lead their first public training session on Monday, marking the start of a new era for the club.

Kömür, who is also a German U20 national player, aims to achieve more with the FC Augsburg team in the coming years. With his long-term contract and the club's public confidence in his abilities, he is likely to be a key player for Augsburg moving forward, with potential to grow into a significant Bundesliga presence.
