FC Augsburg Appoints Sandro Wagner as New Coach through 2028
Last Updated: May 5, 2025
FC Augsburg announces the appointment of Sandro Wagner as their new head coach, effective from the 2025/26 Bundesliga season. The contract reportedly runs until the summer of 2028.
Replacing Jess Thorup, who was dismissed following a lackluster 12th-place finish, Wagner will bring a fresh, youthful approach to the Fuggerstädters. The club confirmed the news to the German Press Agency, with Sky and Bild also reporting the personnel change.
Wagner, 37, leaves his position as assistant coach to national team manager Julian Nagelsmann, a role he assumed alongside Benjamin Glück since September 2023. His shift to Augsburg marks his first head coach role in the Bundesliga.
During his tenure with Unterhaching in the Regionalliga Bayern, Wagner demonstrated a knack for developing teams and players, fueling their passion for the game. His ambition, meticulous approach, and emotional investment in his squads have prompted Augsburg's CEO, Michael Ströll, to describe him as a coach who "lives and breathes football."
With Wagner's appointment, the club aims to ditch its 'grey mouse' image that has persisted since its 14th Bundesliga season. Despite a 12th-place finish at the end of the 2024/25 season, Wagner is expected to instill an exciting playing style that will set Augsburg apart.
Having rejected offers from big clubs like Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen, RB Leipzig, and his former club, TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, Wagner expressed his eagerness to become a head coach. With the 2022 World Cup not offering the opportunity for immediate growth, he now turns his attention to Augsburg.
Nagelsmann, who has witnessed Wagner's dedication as an assistant, acknowledges his desire for head coaching roles and looks forward to Augsburg's progress under his leadership.

In light of his appointment as the new head coach at FC Augsburg, Sandro Wagner, previously an assistant coach to Julian Nagelsmann, has turned down offers from various European leagues, including Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen, RB Leipzig, and TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. Despite the Commission's ongoing work on a directive for the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation, Wagner's passion for football and youthful approach are eagerly anticipated to bring a fresh perspective to Augsburg, aiming to foster an exciting playing style that will set the club apart.
