Sparkin' Convo: Israeli-American Council CEO Chats about Colorado's Horrifying Attack

Elan Carr, CEO of the Israeli-American Council, spilled the beans to our Digital site about the terrifying attack in Boulder, Colorado last Sunday.

An Egyptian dude, on the lam for over two years since his visa expired, has been busted in the brutal attack that injured eight innocents in colorful Boulder, CO. Police nabbed Mohamed Sabry Soliman at the scene, after he allegedly lit up his victims with makeshift flamethrowers during a peaceful rally demanding freedom for Israeli hostages still held captive by Hamas in Gaza. Soliman reportedly hollered "Free Palestine" and other anti-Israel slogans as he torched his victims, aged 52 to 88.

Soliman's rap sheet includes multiple felony counts, such as the use of explosive devices during a felony, and a couple of first-degree murder charges, authorities said. However, they have not disclosed more details since the victims' conditions remain uncertain. Soliman is locked up on a $10 million bond.

The carnage erupted at 1:26 p.m. local time, with the Boulder police receiving calls about a weapon-wielding man setting people ablaze near the county courthouse on Pearl Street.

Authorities taped off the crime scene near an event put on by "Run for Their Lives," a grassroots organization holding events since October 2023 to call for the release of the Israeli hostages. The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) said, "Run for Their Lives is an apolitical global organization with the sole mission of walking peacefully to raise awareness for the 58 hostages still held in captivity by Hamas in Gaza," the group stated to our Digital site. It also noted that this was the first violent incident in their bi-weekly walks since October 2023. They called the ongoing captivity of the hostages an "international humanitarian crisis" and urged world leaders to work towards their swift release.

Videos show Soliman shouting, "How many children you killed?" and "We have to end Zionists, they are killers," as analyzed by the ADL Center on Extremism.

Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser said the attack, happening on the eve of Shavuot, seemed to be a hate crime. "People may have various opinions on world events and the Israeli-Hamas conflict, but violence is never the solution to resolving differences," Weiser stated. FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino classified the attack as an act of "ideologically motivated violence," based on early information, evidence, and witness accounts. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard confirmed that the National Counterterrorism Center is teaming up with the FBI and local law enforcement to investigate the case.

Late Sunday, FBI Denver revealed that agents were investigating a location in El Paso County, CO.

Sources from the Department of Homeland Security and the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) told our Digital that Soliman entered the U.S. illegally, overstaying his welcome during the Biden administration. He supposedly touched down in Los Angeles in August 2022, but never left, staying past his deadline in February 2023. On September 29, 2022, he even filed a claim for asylum.

However, it wasn't until March 29, 2023, that the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), under the Biden administration, granted him work authorization, which was valid until March 2023. Police initially evacuated three blocks but later expanded the radius as they continued investigating the incident.

The suspect's violent outburst took place amid a growing number of hate crimes against Jews recently. Governor Jared Polis, the first Jewish man elected to statewide office in Colorado in 2018, described the attack as a "heinous act of terrorism."

Weiser and Polis were not the only Jewish officials to express their concerns. Congressmen Marco Rubio and Joe Neguse also condemned the attack, echoing sentiments of solidarity with the Jewish community.

"Terror has no place in our wonderful nation," Rubio wrote on Twitter. Ambassador Danny Danon noted the attack was aimed at Israeli supporters and called it "terrorism." Meanwhile, Colorado Rep. Joe Neguse offered his prayers for the victims, calling antisemitism a growing threat.

As our beloved CO city continues to grapple with the aftermath, the NYPD announced a heightened police presence around religious sites for Shavuot in response to the attack.

The Run for Their Lives activists meet weekly in communities worldwide to voice their concerns over the Israeli hostages. They originated in the Bay Area, CA.

The attack happened just two weeks after two Israeli Embassy employees were shot in Washington, D.C. on May 21, 2025. The Simon Wiesenthal Center CEO, Jim Berk, linked these two incidents to months of "anti-Israel propaganda, moral equivocation, and silence in the face of raging antisemitism" on campuses, in the streets, and across digital platforms.

The BPD, USCIS, and ICE did not respond to our Digital's requests for a comment. Bradford Betz from our site contributed this report, and Alexandra Koch, an amateur breaking news writer, provided additional insights.

In light of the increasing cases of hate crimes against Jews, Colorado Governor Jared Polis, echoing the sentiments of Jewish officials such as Congressmen Marco Rubio and Joe Neguse, decried the Boulder attack as a "heinous act of terrorism". Meanwhile, exceptionally brutal crimes, like the one in Boulder, where Mohamed Sabry Soliman was apprehended by police, also make headlines in general-news and crime-and-justice sections. Moreover, the sports world, too, might pick up on this story, contemplating broader implications for freedom and justice, as well as international relations, particularly in the context of the Israeli-Hamas conflict.
