A Prank Goes Wrong: Man Arrested for Fake Bomb Threat at Detroit Airport
FBI apprehends Michigan resident suspected of making hoax bomb call following Spirit Airlines flight no-show
According to FOX 2 Detroit, a man's prank call about a bomb threat on a Spirit Airlines flight at Detroit Metro Airport caused quite a stir on a chilly Thursday morning.
Sources allege that John Charles Robinson, a 23-year-old resident of Monroe, made the call, forcing the evacuation of Flight 2145 bound for LAX. The aircraft, later searched by K-9 units for explosives, was moved to a remote location, and all passengers were safely deplaned and taken to the Evans Terminal for additional screening. However, a thorough search by bomb-sniffing dogs and FBI agents revealed nothing suspicious.
In the initial call, Robinson claimed that "there's gonna be someone who's gonna try to blow up the airport" and "there's gonna be someone that's gonna try to blow up that flight, 2145." He further described an individual, stating they would carry a bomb through the TSA and were planning to proceed despite claims that it would not be detected.
The plane's grounding prompted a coordinated response by the FBI Detroit Joint Terrorism Task Force, in collaboration with the Wayne County Airport Authority Police Department and the U.S. Federal Air Marshal Service. The incident underscored the considerable resources dedicated to maintaining our collective sense of security.
It wasn't long before agents discovered Robinson was booked on the flight but missed it and was later told he needed to re-book. Upon his return to the airport to depart on another flight bound for Los Angeles, he was promptly arrested by the FBI.
The passengers were deplaned and re-screened before the flight resumed its journey to LAX. U.S. Attorney Jerome F. Gorgon Jr. voiced his disapproval, stating such threats "undermine our collective sense of security and waste valuable law enforcement resources."
Robinson was released on bond and will appear in federal court on June 27 for a preliminary examination. Unfortunately, Spirit Airlines did not respond to our requests for comment.
