Fattastic & Ajinomoto Thailand Team Up for Sustainable Fat Alternatives

Singapore-based startup Fattastic Technologies has teamed up with Ajinomoto Thailand to explore sustainable alternatives to conventional fats in food. The partnership aims to apply Fattastic's innovative oil structuring technology, which transforms plant oils into solid formats resembling animal fats.

Fattastic's proprietary technology, FattFlex, replicates the mouthfeel, texture, and taste of animal and saturated fats using encapsulation. It has a high melting point, making it suitable for plant-based meat and bakery applications. With only 20% of the saturated fat content and fewer calories than conventional fats, FattFlex offers a healthier alternative.

The collaboration with Ajinomoto Thailand will involve optimising FattFlex's functionality in various food formats through trials. This comes as Ajinomoto continues its expansion into plant-based products, having recently partnered with Daring Foods and Standing Ovation for meat and casein protein alternatives. Fattastic, backed by investors such as Entrepreneur First and ProVeg incubator, has previously worked with Ajinomoto through the Techbite Accelerator Program.

Fattastic Technologies' partnership with Ajinomoto Thailand marks a significant step towards more sustainable and healthier food options. By exploring the applications of FattFlex, they aim to reduce the use of animal and saturated fats in food. This collaboration joins other innovative startups in Asia, like ImpacFat and Nourish Ingredients, working on sustainable fat alternatives for the food industry.
