Tragic incident: Collision on Baltic Sea bike path results in fatal accident for vacationer - Fatal Bicycle Accident at the Baltic Sea - Tourist perishes in bicycle mishap
In a tragic incident, a 60-year-old vacationer from Mönchengladbach, North Rhine-Westphalia, has lost her life following a bicycle collision on a path along the Baltic Sea at Wismar Bay. The accident occurred on a bike path that is part of the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Baltic Sea coast, specifically along the Wohlenberger Wiek, a semicircular bay in the southwest part of the Wismar Bay.
According to the Rostock police, the vacationer was out riding bicycles with her husband when the accident took place. It appears that the vacationer attempted to overtake a group of cyclists in a poorly visible right curve, resulting in a collision with a 49-year-old racing cyclist. Both cyclists fell during the incident, and the vacationer sustained severe skull brain trauma and a lung injury, despite wearing a bicycle helmet.
Despite resuscitation efforts at the scene, the vacationer was airlifted to the Lübeck Clinic, where she later succumbed to her injuries. The racing cyclist, on the other hand, sustained only minor injuries in the fall.
The Baltic Sea region is renowned for its extensive network of bike paths, most notably the EuroVelo 10 Baltic Sea Cycle Route. This route, which circumnavigates the Baltic Sea, offers a continuous, well-marked cycling path connecting diverse landscapes, coastal towns, and cultural sites. It is a key focus of recent cycling tourism development initiatives, such as the Bike Across the Baltic (BAB) project (2023–2025).
The BAB project has advanced infrastructure, tourism services, and sustainable mobility practices along the route, substantially improving safety and accessibility for cyclists. Many sections, especially those developed for families or casual tourists, emphasise flat, paved trails with minimal traffic interference, enhancing safety and comfort. Service providers and local authorities also supply helpful information on route conditions, weather preparedness, and emergency contacts, ensuring cyclists are well-informed.
It is crucial to remember that while the Baltic Sea bike paths offer safe, well-developed, and scenic cycling opportunities, incidents like this serve as a reminder of the importance of adhering to safety guidelines and being mindful of one's actions while cycling. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased during this difficult time.

- The Community policy should stress the importance of adhering to specific safety guidelines when using bike paths, as demonstrated by the tragic accident in Wismar Bay, which involved a vacationer on the popular EuroVelo 10 Baltic Sea Cycle Route.
- In light of the incident at Wismar Bay, the employment policy for tourism-related jobs in the Baltic Sea region could include safety awareness training to ensure that both locals and visitors prioritize safety while engaging in recreational activities like cycling, helping to reduce the risk of similar accidents in the future.
